Two figures stand within an arc of light—one imparting, one receiving. I painted this image as a quiet homage to 1 Samuel 16, where Samuel anoints David. The cool, water-blue field suggests humility and preparation; the warm halo at the crown hints at oil, favor, and future song. This edition focuses the viewer on that intimate exchange: blessing passed hand-to-shoulder, courage taking root. For the making-of details, see the Artist Notes below.

This image began as a study of a hand-to-shoulder gesture—the simplest picture of blessing I know. In quick sketches that touch set the rhythm; on canvas I kept the ground cool and breathable so humility stayed in the read. My intent was a room-sized whisper: presence passed on, not performed.
I built the field with thin cerulean and turquoise glazes, lifting small passages to open light. The warm “arch of blessing” came late—scumbled, honeyed layers that sit on top like oil, a signal without shouting. A few crisp, calligraphic seams hold the eye where the hands would rest. The square holds both figures in equal weight so the exchange, not either person, stays centered.
In the broader arc of my work, David & Samuel belongs with paintings about lineage, song, and calling—works where courage is given, not seized. In studies, prayer rooms, and mentorship spaces it reads as calm resolve; in living areas it brings a quiet axis of light to gather around.
