Summary
Captivity 4, print is a vertical, 3:4 edition drawn from the original painting Captivity. Pale structural marks and soft mist rise above a deep charcoal ridge, turning the composition into a calm, architectural statement piece. This open edition fine art print is especially suited to dining rooms, tall niches, and modern interiors that lean into layered neutrals and black accents.
Artwork Statement
With Captivity 4, I wanted to see what happened when the original horizontal painting was allowed to stand upright. By rotating and re-framing the composition as a 3:4 vertical, the pale lattice of marks at the top reads more like a façade or scaffold—an orderly structure dissolving slowly into mist. Beneath it, the dark ridge holds steady, carrying the memory of weight and limitation without overwhelming the scene.
Compared with the other editions in this family, this version feels like a breath drawn in a tall room. It keeps the emotional language of Captivity—tension, erosion, slow release—but invites the eye to travel upward. I imagined this piece hanging where people gather around a table, or where a narrow wall needs something thoughtful rather than loud: a quiet reminder that even long seasons of constraint can lift into light.
Colour & mood
- Monochrome-inspired palette: soft whites, silvery greys, blue-violet haze, and deep charcoal blacks.
- Overall mood: contemplative, calm, quietly dramatic rather than high-contrast or harsh.
- The vertical 3:4 crop emphasises upward movement and gentle spaciousness.
- Pairs beautifully with white, greige, stone, light oak, and matte black metal.
Design notes
- Vertical 3:4 aspect ratio derived from the 12 x 9 in acrylic-on-paper original Captivity.
- Pale lattice-like marks at the top suggest structure, language, or a façade, without becoming literal.
- A soft band of mist mediates between the light upper field and the dark ridge below.
- The deepest values sit near the lower edge, grounding the piece and balancing tall spaces.
- Fine gradations in the midtones reward close viewing, particularly on paper and canvas.
Where it works
- Dining rooms and breakfast areas where a vertical focal point can echo the rhythm of table, chairs, and pendant lighting.
- Tall, narrow walls in hallways, stair landings, and entryways that need a sophisticated, quiet statement.
- Modern bedrooms and sitting areas styled with layered linens, black accents, and soft neutral walls.
- Hospitality spaces—restaurant corners, hotel corridors, or private dining rooms—with a refined, contemporary aesthetic.
Pairing ideas
- Create a vertical–horizontal dialogue by pairing Captivity 4, print with the full-frame Captivity, print on an adjacent wall.
- Hang alongside Captivity 2, print and Captivity 3, print to show three distinct framings of the same original—pressure, release, and quiet ascent.
- For a monochrome, faith-forward wall, add a complementary piece such as Golgotha, print to introduce a different horizon and symbolic depth.

Print options & materials
- Fine Art Paper (Framed or Unframed) — Museum-grade, archival paper with a smooth matte surface and pigment-based inks. Ideal for custom framing in dining rooms, hallways, and bedrooms where you want subtle texture and low glare.
- Gallery-Wrapped Canvas — Printed on premium canvas and hand-stretched over solid wood bars. The soft texture and matte finish give the piece a painterly presence, ready to hang straight away.
- Metal Prints — Image infused into a lightweight aluminium panel for crisp detail and a sleek, frameless look. A strong choice for contemporary dining rooms, open-plan living areas, or hospitality installations.
- Acrylic Glass Prints — Face-mounted behind polished acrylic for luminous depth and a refined, gallery-style finish. Perfect when you want high impact and a clean, architectural feel.
Bathroom suitability
Captivity 4, print can be a beautiful choice for spa-inspired bathrooms or powder rooms, especially in its vertical format. For spaces with regular humidity, metal and acrylic are recommended; framed paper and canvas are best reserved for well-ventilated rooms away from direct steam.
Sizing guidance (3:4 aspect — vertical)
Available sizes for this 3:4 vertical edition are 9 x 12, 18 x 24, 24 x 32, 30 x 40, and 36 x 48 in. A 9 x 12 in print works well in a small niche, beside a bookshelf, or in a compact hallway. The 18 x 24 and 24 x 32 in sizes suit most dining rooms and bedrooms, while 30 x 40 and 36 x 48 in create a confident focal point over a sideboard, console, or large table.
As a simple rule of thumb, choose artwork that is about 60–75% of the width of the furniture below it, and hang the centre of the piece around 57–60 in from the floor, lowering slightly if it sits over a dining table or bench so the artwork and furniture feel connected.
Quality & care
- Each print is made to order using archival inks and professional substrates, produced in North America.
- Tonal balance is carefully calibrated to honour the original acrylic-on-paper painting while embracing this vertical 3:4 framing.
- Display away from prolonged, direct sunlight to preserve depth and nuance over time.
- For metal and acrylic, dust gently with a soft, non-abrasive cloth; avoid harsh cleaners on acrylic surfaces.
- For framed paper and canvas, allow a small gap between the artwork and any heat sources such as radiators or fireplaces.
Integrity notes
Captivity 4, print is an open edition fine art print derived from my 2018 acrylic-on-paper original Captivity (inventory code ART-C-201811). This edition uses a vertical 3:4 crop of the same photographed painting, rotated and framed to emphasise the rising light-filled field and upper lattice of marks.
No new painted imagery has been added or digitally removed. Aside from standard photographic adjustments (border removal, glare correction, contrast refinement) and my small signature, what you see in this print is a faithful representation of the original work, presented in a new orientation to serve tall spaces.

Artist reflection
Walls grow tall around the table,
lines and lattices holding their shape.
Still, a quiet column of light keeps rising,
reminding the room that weight can lift.
Scripture
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will bring my people Israel and Judah back from captivity and restore them to the land I gave their ancestors to possess.” (Jeremiah 30:3)
